Spring has well and truly landed. The magpies are swooping, the wrens are in their electric-blue best, and in a couple of weeks thousands of Australians will head into their backyards for the Aussie Bird Count during National Bird Week (19–25 October).
It felt like the right time for a full update on the Koi Aviary: our collection of Australian pocket knives, each one named after, and inspired by, an Australian bird. There are 23 birds in the flock right now, and at the end of this post there's a sneaky look at seven more that are on their way.
Every knife is designed in South Australia by Koi Knives. Here's who's in the Aviary this October.
Backyard birds
The birds you'll hear before you see. Most of the Aviary started right here, in Australian backyards.
"Max" | The Magpie
Our flagship, with a CPM MagnaCut blade hardened to 63HRC. Bold, territorial and the unofficial alarm clock of the nation. It's swooping season, so read why magpies swoop.
$245 AUD · Shop "Max" →
"Bella" | The Blue Wren
Tiny, bright and full of personality, with a CPM MagnaCut blade: our most affordable MagnaCut pocket knife. Male wrens put on their electric-blue colours every spring, which makes Bella the bird of the moment.
$195 AUD · Shop "Bella" →
"Willy" | The Willie Wagtail
Small but completely fearless, willie wagtails will chase off birds many times their size. Always on the move, always wagging that tail.
$195 AUD · Shop "Willy" →
"Kyle" | The Kookaburra
The world's largest kingfisher and the laugh of the Australian bush at dawn and dusk.
$245 AUD · Shop "Kyle" →
"Garry" | The Galah
Pink, grey and gloriously silly. Few birds have given Australian slang more than the galah.
$245 AUD · Shop "Garry" →
"Ruby" | The Crimson Rosella
Deep red and violet-blue, and a regular in the Adelaide Hills where Koi's story began.
$255 AUD · Shop "Ruby" →
"Lily" | The Rainbow Lorikeet
Every colour at once, on a CPM MagnaCut blade. Lorikeets have a brush-tipped tongue built for nectar, and a volume setting stuck on high.
$275 AUD · Shop "Lily" →
"Henry" | The Honeyeater
Our "gentleman's knife". Inspired by the New Holland honeyeater, with its flashes of yellow and that bright white eye.
$195 AUD · Shop "Henry" →
"Harry" | The Honeyeater (G10)
Henry's hard-working cousin, with G10 scales for pockets that see a bit more action.
$195 AUD · Shop "Harry" →
The clever black birds
Smart, cheeky and badly misunderstood. Australia's black birds are some of the most intelligent animals on the planet.
"Chris" | The Crow
A born problem-solver. Crows can use tools and remember who's been good to them, and who hasn't.
$285 AUD · Shop "Chris" →
"Ray" | The Raven
Look for the white eye and listen for that long, drawn-out call. Ray is the moodiest knife in the Aviary.
$225 AUD · Shop "Ray" →
"Karen" | The Currawong
Yellow eyes, a ringing call and absolutely no interest in your opinion. Every street has a Karen.
$225 AUD · Shop "Karen" →
Giants and hunters
The big, the fast and the downright dangerous.
"Evan" | The Wedge-tailed Eagle
Australia's largest bird of prey, riding thermals high above the outback.
$295 AUD · Shop "Evan" →
"Ford" | The Peregrine Falcon
The fastest animal on Earth in a dive. Yes, the name is exactly the joke you think it is.
$265 AUD · Shop "Ford" →
"Colin" | The Cassowary
A living dinosaur with a helmet. Treat with respect, both the bird and the knife.
$295 AUD · Shop "Colin" →
Coast, river and wetland
For the fishos, the beachgoers and anyone who's lost a chip to a gull.
"Pat" | The Pacific Gull
The big gull of Australia's southern coast, with that heavy red-tipped bill. Pat is our fishing-ready pocket knife.
$265 AUD · Shop "Pat" →
"Mr Percival" | The Pelican
Named for South Australia's most famous pelican, the star of Storm Boy, and at home on the Coorong.
$325 AUD · Shop "Mr Percival" →
"Ian" | The Ibis
Better known as the "bin chicken", and one of the Aviary's most-loved knives. His 102.5mm spearpoint is the longest blade of our four MagnaCut pocket knives. Don't judge a bird by its bin.
$275 AUD · Shop "Ian" →
"Michael" | The Mallard
One half of our duck pair. The mallard is the introduced one, released alongside a native Australian bird.
$285 AUD · Shop "Michael" →
"Wendy" | The Wood Duck
The native half of the pair. Australian wood ducks are as at home on a suburban lawn as on the water.
$285 AUD · Shop "Wendy" →
Bowerbirds and black cockatoos
The collectors and the rare ones.
"Bob" | The Male Bowerbird
Glossy blue-black, violet eyes, and an obsession with collecting blue treasures to decorate his bower.
$245 AUD · Shop "Bob" →
"Bek" | The Female Bowerbird
Olive-green, beautifully patterned, and the one who decides whether Bob's bower is any good.
$195 AUD · Shop "Bek" →
"Georgia" | The Glossy Black Cockatoo
A quiet, rare black cockatoo that feeds almost entirely on she-oak cones.
$245 AUD · Shop "Georgia" →
A sneaky look at what's coming
The Aviary keeps growing. Here are seven birds currently being built. Some of them are a little different: the owls and cockatoos come in a tactical style, tougher and more rugged than our classic everyday-carry folders.
No prices or release dates just yet. Join the Aviary Society to be first to know when each one lands.
"Greg" | The Gang-gang Cockatoo
Scruffy red crest, smoky grey body and a call like a creaky gate. One of Australia's most charismatic cockatoos.
Coming soon
"Byron" | The Black Cockatoo
A big, slow-flying black cockatoo with a flash of colour in the tail.
Coming soon
"Will" | The White Cockatoo
Loud, clever and impossible to ignore. The sulphur-crested cockatoo needs no introduction.
Coming soon
"Barry" | The Barn Owl
Silent flight and that heart-shaped face.
Coming soon
The Boobook Owl
Australia's smallest and most widespread owl, the one behind the "mopoke" call at night. Name to be revealed.
Coming soon
"Tom" | The Tawny Frogmouth
Not actually an owl, and we know it. A master of disguise that can pass for a broken branch, and our most military-styled knife yet.
Coming soon
"Oliver" | The Owl
Big eyes, big attitude. Oliver is our tactical owl.
